A view of the canal in Lewiston around 1900. Stamped on the bottom of the card is: "R.M. Davis, Denver."

Robert M. Davis, the owner of Davis' Curiosity Store at 304 Sixteenth St., Denver, was a "Dealer in Specimens, Curiosities, Views, Etc." Photographic "views" of interest could be printed and sold in such shops, even if the locality shown was thousands of miles away.

Freelan O. and Flora Stanley had lived in Lewiston from 1884-1890 when the Stanley Dry Plate Co. was in operation there. Mr. Stanley was forced to move to Colorado in 1903 for health reasons (tuberculosis), and he and his wife spent part of the winter in Denver. It is possible that one of them spotted this photo of their old home town in a Denver shop and purchased it.
