Image Info

The sitting room of the Rumford Mechanics Institute was a part of the educational, recreational, and leisure activity center created by Oxford Paper Company owner Hugh J. Chisholm. This room could be used for conversation and relaxation for the company's employees. Built in 1911, the building is still in use today.

The photograph was published in a "Mechanics Institute, Rumford, Maine" booklet handed out at the building's ribbon cutting on November 9, 1911. It was published by University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
