Image Info

The photograph shows the hoister operator is in the process of lowering six men into the quarry. In the early days of slate quarrying the men stood on a single platform without sides, suspended by a chain which they hung onto while being lowered into or lifted out of the quarry.

Over the years both safety and protective gear improved. Though the box was still in use for hoisting, by the 1920s and 30s the men also wore waterproof slickers and protective helmets. Even with improvements to safety and protective gear mining continued to be a dangerous occupation.
