Len Libby Candies was originally opened on Higgins Beach in Scarborough in the 1920s. It is the third oldest business in Scarborough.

Len Libby, from the eighth generation of Libbys living in Scarborough, learned the chocolate and confection-making process while worked in Portland in the late 19th century. After beginning to sell his own candies out of his home in Scarborough in 1926, Lenny opened his candy shop on Higgins Beach. He later passed the store on to generations of the Hemond family, who went on to place a life-sized chocolate moose named “Lenny” in front of the shop.
