Image Info The caption reads, "Hotel Sedgwick, Bath, Maine." Originally built in 1908 as a mansion for lumber magnate Albert H. Shaw, the building was purchased in 1936 by Joseph Charles Footer Sr. and his sons, Harold E. Footer Sr., Every J. Footer, and Joseph C. Footer Jr. They immediately began renovations to convert the home into the Sedgwick Hotel.
Show Details
The grand opening took place on May 6, 1936. The Bath Daily Times described the Sedgwick as “one of Maine’s showplaces,” stating that “no expense was spared in building the hotel” and that it would “rival New England’s finest hotels.”
On May 13, 1936, a bronze tablet was presented to the Footers by Bath businessmen in recognition of their public spirit. The hotel later served as quarters for naval officers during World War II and the Korean War, particularly those stationed at Brunswick Naval Air Station.
The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1930–1945.
