Image Info A Portland Camera Club member at the Desert of Maine stands with his camera and tripod, looking out over the landscape. Hand-painted onto the slide is a camel with rider, and the camel is shown biting the man on the rear. The photo's title, written on the slide, uses formatting to underscore the intended joke, reading: "On the Desert of Maine the 'Camel' found GrAss."

The image was likely captured during a Portland Camera Club outing, occasions when club members would travel to various spots around Maine to picnic, hike, and take photographs. The resulting photographs were sometimes augmented with humorous titles and additions, often referring to inside jokes, and then shared at weekly meetings.
The Portland Camera Club was founded in 1899 and is one of the oldest camera clubs in the United States. Members still meet regularly to share and comment on one another's work.
