Five thousand spectators eagerly attended the launch of Harold S. Vanderbilt's Class J racing sloop "Ranger" at Bath Iron Works on May 11, 1937. "Ranger" was built to defend the America's Cup title for the New York Yacht Club and cost Vanderbilt $300,000. The ranger had a 3-ton aluminum mast that was 166 ft long. The sloop comfortably defended the America's Cup title that year.

The Portland Press Herald printed a full page of photographs of the launch in the May 12 edition.
