On February 9, 1925, Chapman Bank relocated millions in cash, gold, and securities from the Oxford Building at 185 Middle Street, Portland, to their recently erected Monument Square building at 477 Congress Street.

While the bank kept the date and time of the transfer secret, once the loaded wagon, with its many armed guards and backup vehicles, made its way up Middle Street to Monument Square, the public became aware and flocked to see the commotion.

In this photograph, a pedestrian got too close for the officer's comfort to the vast amount of money and had his revolver ready for an attempt at a robbery.
