After the ballast train has dumped the fresh crushed stone to repair a poorly drained section of track the sectionmen spread the ballast before tamping.

X400 is a “multiple tamper” which tamps “crushed rock ballast firmly around ties...[eliminating] nearly all hand tamping.” Bangor and Aroostook Railroad's magazine, "Maine Line," v. 4 #5, p. 13.
