This ribbon was worn by Eliza Merrill on the occasion of the Marquis de Lafayette's ceremonial visit to Portland in 1825.

Lafayette was a Revolutionary War comrade-at-arms of Major General Peleg Wadsworth, Wadsworth's son-in-law Stephen Longfellow delivered the welcoming address to Lafayette in Portland.

The ribbon was engraved by David G. Johnson.
