Employees working at the Saco and Pettee Machine Shops built the machinery used in the textile mills of Biddeford-Saco and beyond.

Originally part of the Saco Water Power Company, they later became the Saco-Lowell Shops. Many of the buildings that were located along Smith Street were part of the shops' foundry buildings.
