Thomas Goodall put up this building in 1879-80 for use as a library, but as little interest was shown, it was used for the first twenty years by various fraternal orders. Interest in having a library increased in the 1890s and the Sanford Library Association was formed toward the end of the century. Mr. Goodall's building finally opened as a library on December 21, 1898. It served as the town's library until the Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library was dedicated in 1937. The Masonic Lodge continued to hold its meetings on the second floor after the library opened and its sign can be seen above the entrance.
