Katharine Ridgeway [Hunt], a dramatic reader and humorist, and Ella Harding Peffer (1887-1945), a vocalist, began their camp on Clary Lake in Jefferson.

Peffer's husband, Crawford (1868-1961), ran the Redpath Chautauqua of New York and New England, a summer lecture circuit, and the Redpath Lyceum, winter lecture circuit.

The camp, which promoted the "physical, mental, moral, and social development" of girls from ages 7 to 21, operated from 1923 to the 1940s.
