James A. Garfield (1831-1881) served as the 20th United States President. From Ohio, he served in the Civil War achieving the rank of Brigadier General. He was a Republican Congressman for many years and elected President in 1881. Garfield met an untimely end when an embittered lawyer shot him. Garfield died of his wounds two months later.
