Image Info

A postcard depicting Main Street in Ellsworth, as viewed from the Union River looking up the hill towards High Street. The buildings are bedecked in patriotic bunting for the visit of President William Howard Taft during an extended 4th of July celebration in 1910. Taft spent ten days touring Maine from his yacht the USS Mayflower. His stops included visits at Eastport, Bar Harbor, Ellsworth, Bangor, Seal Harbor, and Northeast Harbor.

This is one of the few surviving images of Main Street, Ellsworth, before the fire of 1933, which destroyed the buildings pictured here.

The reverse side of the postcard contains a note from Mim to her sweetheart Tom Phillips of Ellsworth:

Dear Tom,
Thanks to you I'm quite pregnant, call me as soon as your boat docks. My father and I will be waiting.
Love Mim
