Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks (1816-1894) was governor of Massachusetts from 1858-1860. He was named a major general of volunteers in May 1861. He served in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign in 1862, organized new recruits in November 1862, and replaced Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler in the Department of the Gulf in December 1863.

After the war, he was elected to Congress, where he served until 1873, and then again from 1875-1879.
