Portland's busy port and waterfront-area businesses are visible in this engraving made in the last year of the Civil War.

The Portland Company iron foundry, at the eastern end of the waterfront, built locomotives for the government and for civilian railroads; the J.B. Brown Co. continued to import molasses and process sugar, and several shipyards built gunboats as well as private vessels during the war.
