This oil on canvas portrait of Samuel Freeman (1743-1831), prominent figure in Portland, Maine, is attributed to artist E.W.H. Brainard, 1887. It was painted after and 18th century original by an unknown artist, dated 1795. Samuel Freeman, at age seventeen, was a founder of the first public library in Falmouth (now Portland), served on the Committee of Correspondence during the Revolution, and was Portland's first postmaster in 1775 among other things.Show Details
