In 1924, Portland had three telegraph companies: American District Telegraph Co., Postal Telegraph Cable Co. and Western Union Telegraph.

Women frequently worked as telegraph operators or as "office girls." However, by the late 1920's, telephones started to overtake telegraphy, limiting one career path for women, while opening others.
