The site of Lakewood Theatre in Madison was originally a Native American settlement along Lake Wesserunsett in Lakewood Grove that was transformed in 1895 into a small amusement park and then built upon by a spiritualist group. At the close of the 19th century, Herbert L. Swett took over management of the park and added a theater addition to the hall earlier constructed by William Hayden. The first play opened in 1901. Productions geared toward Broadway success were often tried out at the theater in its prime years of 1925-1941, during which time it was nicknamed “Broadway in Maine.” The theater operated with a resident company format until 1961 and now hosts a wide array of productions, boasting designation as the State Theatre of Maine.
