The Pittsfield Public Library opened its doors in 1904 after back and forth debate in town meetings over the acceptability of the “Lancey lot” for the new building, as concerns for noise and the safety of children crossing railroad tracks to the site were raised by citizens. The Soldier’s Monument in front of the Carnegie library was dedicated the same year to honor Civil War veterans. The central dome now features a colorful mural that was painted by Tim Sample in 1983.
