The Hill Mill was one of many textile mills in Lewiston-Auburn. Construction began in 1850 under the Hill Manufacturing Company of local industrialist Thomas J Hill, and the mill remained operational for over a century, until it closed in 1971, having been absorbed into the Bates Manufacturing Company.Show Details
The textile industry provided the primary means of employment for Franco-Americans. From their construction in the 1860s and 70s, the workforce of these mills was primarily Franco-American. Many mills encouraged their workers to play hockey, and some maintained their own teams.
