Porter's Landing is one of four villages that make up the town of Freeport. It was the port for Freeport before the arrival of the railroad, and it served communities as far inland as Durham.

Porter's Landing is known for the its boat building shipyard, but the village also had other industries, including a salt-work, a brickyard, and a crab meat factory.
