The caption reads, "Fletcher's Neck Life Saving Station, Biddeford Pool, Me." Many ships and crews were lost in the Biddeford Pool area over the years. The United States Coast Guard established life saving stations along the Maine coastline, manned by paid employees, who were on call to respond to marine accidents. The four most dangerous points along the coast were West Quoddy Head, Cross Island, Crumple Island and Biddeford Pool. This station at Biddeford Pool was manned in 1874 and maintained until 1973.
