Sarah Farmer, as one of the founders of Green Acre in Eliot, Maine said, "In looking for an emblem we wanted something that would be a call to everbody, and fit everybody--and we felt that the Message that had been brought to the world by prophet after prophet was the message of Peace. So we have put on a large banner over our heads--PEACE." -from Bahiyyih Randall Winkler, "Sarah Jane Farmer 1847-1916". The peace flag was first raised in 1894 at the Green Acre Conferences and was thirty-six feet long with green letters on a white background. It hung on an eighty-five foot flag pole that was once a ship's mast.
