The steamer "Brooklyn" hit Hog Island ledge 250 feet from Fort Gorges in Casco Bay on April 6, 1883.

A diary belonging to George Washington Willard noted that he was "On the Brooklyn at work" on April 10, "on the wreck at work" on April 11-13 and April 16-17. On April 18, he was "discharging Sloop of Wreck stuff" and on April 20, the "Wreck stuff sold at auction."
