Dolley Madison (1768-1849) conducted the social life of the White House during the presidencies of Thomas Jefferson and her husband, James Madison.

Dolley Payne Todd Madison (1768-1849), the "queen of Washington society," reigned over the nation's capital for nearly 50 years.

She is pictured here wearing a shawl given to her by Mainer Julia Dearborn Wingate.
