The house on Route One, Spring Island, later #14 Elm Street, was built in 1798 by Captain Seth Spring, a veteran of the Battle of Bunker Hill. He served three years in the American Army during the Revolution.

Captain Spring built this large three story federal building in 1798 (now used as the Deering Lumber offices), which became known as Spring's Tavern. It was a popular stopping point for travelers on the Kings Highway (now Elm Street/Route 1). Captain Spring and his partner, Captain Bradbury, entertained their fellow war compatriot the Marquis de Lafayette at Spring's Tavern during his famous tour of Maine in 1825.
