Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), a native of Portland, is best known for his poems, including "The Courtship of Miles Standish," "Evangeline," and "Hiawatha."

This photograph was taken on the Isle of Wight in 1868 by the creative, eccentric, and now celebrated Julia Margaret Cameron. Tennyson took Longfellow to her studio for his session and left him with the words, "I'll come back soon and see what is left of you."

This copy of the photograph belonged to the poet's brother, Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow.
