"We are Free Masons; our Secret is Industry & Skill" is the motto accompanying a drawing of tools used by Masons, Plasterers, Brick Makers and Stone Cutters," artisans who were part of the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association in Portland.

The group carried the banner in a parade Oct. 8, 1841 to help celebrate skilled artisans and civic pride.

The reverse of the banner reads, "When History's page no date can give Of Empires overthrown, Our Country's deeds and ours shall live In Monumental Stone."

William Capen Jr., a member of the Charitable Mechanic Association, painted the linen banner.
