A banner celebrates Mathematical Instrument Makers, Watch Makers, Gold & Silversmiths, Looking Glass Makers And Gilders who were part of the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association.

The painted linen banner, carried in a parade in 1841 in Portland, features an hour glass surrounded by the words, "The true measure of Time is by Deeds and not by Centuries." On the other side is a frame enclosing the text, "We make no Unjust Reflections But Hold the Mirror up to nature."

The Charitable Mechanic Association formed in 1815 to support and promote the skills of a variety of artisans.
