A British shilling coin from the period of Queen Elizabeth I. Written along the edge on the front is "ELIZABETH.D.G.AN.FR.ET.HI.REGINA (Elizabeth by the grace of God, Queen of England).Show Details
On the reverse rim is written "POSUE DEVI ADIVTOREM" (I have made God my helper).
The coin probably was buried by Walt Bagnall, the first settler on Richmond Island in 1628. He was a trader and was killed, perhaps by Indians, in October 1631.
