This house was built by Eliphalet Gilman, a glazier, ca. 1793. The most important family to own it were the Oliver Whipples. Mrs. Whipple was the daughter of Dr. Sylvester Gardiner, a Kennebec Proprietor and the man for whom the City of Gardiner was named.
