Samuel K. Gilman (1796-1882) came to Hallowell in 1815. He began his life there as a printer and soon rose to the position of editor and proprietor of the American Advocate newspaper. He became a lawyer in 1832 and represented Hallowell for four years in the Maine Legislature. Samuel Gilman served as Hallowell municipal judge from 1852 to 1872. His daughter Sophia was the librarian at the Hubbard Free library for many years and his son Gorman moved to Hawaii and represented the Republic of Hawaii in Boston during the period from 1894 to 1898. Samuel Gilman was also very active in Hallowell church matters.
