Image Info The view down Pleasant Street from the First Baptist Church steeple is probably one of the earliest photographs of Blue Hill.

The building with the arched windows on the right side of the street is the Old Town Hall with John Cheever's house just beyond, while the near building on the left is the village school.
In the background is a vessel being constructed on ways adjacent to the town wharf. Shipbuilding was a major enterprise in Blue Hill during the first half of the nineteenth century.
Over 130 sailing vessels were built between 1792 and 1891; most were coastal trading schooners but more than several were brigs, barks and full-rigged ships.
