The ice industry was an important part of seasonal economics along the Kennebec River, and remained so until refrigeration technology changed.

The Morse family owned the Knickerbocker Ice Company that controlled much of the Kennebec ice trade.

Charles Wyman Morse, known as the Ice King, dominated the national industry. Morse in 1904 donated the money to build the first Morse High School in memory of his mother.
