Thomaston Academy was erected in the Greek Revival style for the sum of $3,000 in 1847. The original academy is the middle section of the building, which still stands on East Main Street.

The school provided instruction to both elementary grades and advanced pupils. In 1860 the town established a high school in connection with the Academy.

Two wings were added in 1923-24 by E. L. Spear and Co of Rockland to accommodate the growing number of high school students.

In 1963, the high school was relocated to the George's Valley High School on Valley Street. The Thomaston Public Library is now housed in the eastern side of the building.
