Captain Nicholas Clase and his family were among the first 51 original settlers of the Maine Swedish Colony. They settled on Lot #135 in New Sweden. In the photo are pictured his wife, Anna, son Karl, and two daughters Agnes and Hilma.

Captain Clase was the only Swede of the first settlers to be able to speak and write in English. It became his responsibility to run the store and keep records for the colony.
