Congress Square in Portland in about 1885. The house on the corner of High and Congress streets is the Matthew Cobb House, built in 1801, and the first house in the city with gas lights. The site was later occupied by the YMCA, then replaced by the Libby Building.

At left is the Free Street Baptist Church, in the center is the High Street Congregational Church, and at right is the First Universalist Church.
