The Hillcrest Hotel on Chebeague Island was a popular tourist destination in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Ferries transported visitors from the mainland either for day trips or to stay overnight.

This building burned on Aug. 23, 1923 in the worst fire in the island's history. A new Hillcrest was built the next year.
