A farmer uses a riding hoe on his potato field in Caribou in about 1930.Show Details
After a potato field has been cultivated, the loose dirt is piled around the base of the potato plants to protect the potatoes growing near the surface from being damaged by the sun. While not a technically difficult job, it was typically done during the hottest days of June and horse flies constantly tormented the horses.
