The photograph of Market Square in Portland, about 1886, shows the old Portland City Hall building in the center.

The building, which was known as the Old Market House, Old City Hall, and Old Town Hall, depending on the era, was built in 1825 in Market Square.

It was originally used as a military hall. When Portland became a city in 1832, the building was remodeled and became known as "City Hall."

It served as City Hall until 1860. From 1880 to 1889, the Maine Historical Society occupied the third floor. and was torn down in 1888.
