Among the equipment in the Portland Company machine shop was a 15-ton overhead Cleveland traveling crane that could lift items and move them side to side or the length of the shop.

The company, begun by John Poor in 1846 to build locomotives, was a metal foundry that built engines as well as railcars, steam locomotives, and marine vessels.
