"Here we can see a load of 12 steam retorts loaded on a Grand Trunk Railroad flatcar outside the Portland Company, awaiting shipment to [Pepperell Mills in Biddeford, Maine] one of the many Maine canneries. Thousands of the retorts, or pressure cookers, were used in the sardine-canning industry alone in the state."- Fletcher, David H. 'The Portland Company 1846-1982.' Charleston, S.C. : Arcadia Pub., 2002, 123.
