Image Info Black Hawk Putnam, mounted on a white horse, was named for the famed Sauk Native man. He was 23 when he enlisted as Captain of Company E of the Maine 1st Cavalry Regiment on October 19, 1861. Putnam was a descendant of Aaron Putnam, one of the founding settlers of Houlton.

Rice Block was being built during this celebration, probably about half completed. It was started in 1897 and finished in 1898.
