About 500 years ago, Wabanakis first received Basque fishermen, Italian explorer Verrazano in 1524--though he noted they weren’t very friendly--French fur traders, and later, English colonists to their homeland.

This 1618 French map, based on a 1607 expedition by Marc Lescarbot, showed the Wabanaki communities (Etechemins) in relation to the rivers (Kinibeki/Kennebec, Norumbega/Penobscot, Sant le Croix/Saint Croix) as well as the landscape of New England and the Maritimes. European settlements are designated with crosses and houses.
