Firemen’s musters and parades were important public events in nineteenth century Maine cities and towns. Local fire companies created pride in their purpose after they displayed their new equipment and handsome uniforms.

In Portland, the Casco Engine Co. No. 1 participated in a firemen's muster and parade on September 30, 1846 on Middle Street with the domed Merchants' Exchange Building in the background.
