Heaves, also known as Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO) or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a non-infectious airway condition in horses six years or older. An allergic reaction to inhaled particles, such as molds, caused coughing, wheezing, and an intolerance to exercise. The home-spun recipe called for feeding the horse a mixture made from cooked down and strained cattle feet.

The additional remedies were for lameness and inflammation in a horses's eye.
