Built in 1906 at the behest of Hugh J. Chisholm (1847-1912), the Strathglass Building was designed by the Providence, RI based architectural firm of Stone, Carpenter & Willson. Originally three stories, a fourth story was added in the1930s when it was redesigned (following a fire) as a hotel.

The Beaux-Arts building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. According to the application, the name Strathglass derives from a river in Scotland which ran through Chisholm's ancestral estate.
