The Lincoln County Bank in Wiscasset issued $3 bills in the early 1800s. Before Abraham Lincoln passed the National Banking Act, banks were under state charter and were able to issue their own currency. The currency was usually backed by gold or silver and aimed to facilitate local trade. After the act was passed in 1860, banks went under national charter, and these bills became obsolete.
